چکیده

This paper discusses early results from a project called Morph where the goal is to develop a microarchitecture that can adapt its intrinsic performance dynamically. By observing that power dissipation is, to a first approximation, proportional to a power of the performance, reducing the performance characteristics thus reduces the power even faster, resulting in greatly improved performance/ watt characteristics. These techniques are largely independent of other techniques, such as voltage scaling, and as such add an extra runtime “gear” which a real embedded system may manipulate. In addition to the microarchitecture work, the paper also briefly discusses the driving application to be used in its evaluation, namely planetary rovers, and a discussion of some of the runtime software considerations that will be necessary to work through to make the “gear-changing” a usable piece of technology to real applications.

An experimental assessment of nanostructured materials embedded in a PCM-based heat sink for transient thermal management of electronic

In the present paper, an experimental assessment was performed on the transient thermal performance of a heat sink filled by a phase change material (PCM) and PCM embedded with carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and titania (TiO2) nanoparticles as nanostructured materials. In order to enhance the thermal conductivity of PCM, CNFs and TiO2 nanoparticles at different loadings (0.5wt. % and 2 wt.% of CNFs a...

OpenMP Implementation and Performance on Embedded Renesas M32R Chip Multiprocessor

CMP (Chip Multiprocessor) is a promising processor architecture, not only for high performance but also for reducing power and energy consumption in embedded applications. We have implemented an OpenMP compiler for an embedded Renesas M32R chip multiprocessor as a parallel programming environment. In this paper, we report the preliminary performance of OpenMP benchmarks, including scientific an...

Specializing Cache Structures for High Performance and Energy Conservation in Embedded Systems

Increasingly tight energy design goals require processor architects to rethink the organizational structure of microarchitectural resources. We examine a new multilateral cache organization, replacing a conventional data cache with a set of smaller region caches that significantly reduces energy consumption with little performance impact. This is achieved by tailoring the cache resources to the...

An Interleaved Configuration of Modified KY Converter with High Conversion Ratio for Renewable Energy Applications; Design, Analysis and Implementation

In this paper, a new high efficiency, high step-up, non-isolated, interleaved DC-DC converter for renewable energy applications is presented. In the suggested topology, two modified step-up KY converters are interleaved to obtain a high conversion ratio without the use of coupled inductors. In comparison with the conventional interleaved DC-DC converters such as boost, buck-boost, SEPIC, ZETA a...
